MacDonald Island Park, Fort McMurray

Fort McMurray is incredibly lucky to have MacDonald Island Park which is Canada’s largest community recreation center. It’s currently home to the Suncor Community Leisure center, the Miskanaw golf club and soon to be home to Shell Place.

MacDonald Island park houses the Syncrude aquatic center which is a premier waterpark with Olympic size pool and diving which would be the envy of communities across Canada.

And that’s just to start there are also four ice surfaces including two NHL size rinks, two multipurpose field houses, eight sheet curling rink, racquetball courts, squash courts, a rock climbing wall, 15,000 square foot fitness center, multiple fitness and dance studios, the Mac island dance academy, and the indoor running track.

But wait there’s more, there’s an indoor playground and Child care center, a community art gallery and the fort McMurray public library.

The Miskanaw golf club is also on MacDonald Island Park and is now in the final stages of redevelopment with great features and views. The course is over 7000 yards for a challenging par 72 and features a stunning new par five it’s 575 yards with a large menacing lake surrounding the green.

When you finish around the golf you can stop in to the Fox den and enjoy their full course menu and a cold beverage. The patio is fantastic place to hang out in the summer and offer some of the most amazing views in Fort McMurray.

Opening in 2015 Shell Place will be Fort McMurray’s main conference, sports and entertainment center.

Shell Place will feature the SMS stadium and MainStage were world-class events in sporting an entertainment will take place. It will also have a tournament center for baseball and softball this stadium can hold 5,500 fans when you include the party zone. And it doesn’t stop there there will be a full multisport Fieldhouse a badminton center, the Molson outdoor rink, a community pavilion, Nexen stage and the total interpretive walking trail that speaks of the Spirit of the north and the beauty of the boreal forest.
