Peppermint Tea Bags For Getting Rid of Mice

Mice Versus peppermint teabag: Do you have a mouse problem? Mice are nocturnal creatures so sometimes it’s hard to catch them throughout the day unless the problem is really bad and you have a mouse infestation. Get rid of mice using a peppermint tea bag “REALLY!” A few signs that will let you know if you have mice are:

  1. You see most droppings around the house
  2. Shredded papers, or boxes (nests)
  3. Strange sounds in the walls
  4. Mice come with their own special order, sometimes it smells really bad in this could mean dead lice rotting.
  5. Holes chewed in boxes, bags or walls

Mice are rampant breeders

If you do have a mouse in the house, you’re going to want to take care of it quickly. The gestation period of a mouse is only 3 weeks, they will give birth to approximately six to ten baby mice up to 10 times per year.  They don’t have a set time of year for breeding, it happens throughout the year. This means that one female Mouse could deliver as many as 100 mice a year. You can see how this problem would add up very fast.

How Do I Find Mice In My House?

Because mice are typically nocturnal animals they are sometimes very hard to track. You might know that you have a problem due to droppings and shredded paper, but you can’t seem to find where they are. A great trick for this is to sprinkle baby powder on the floor along the wall in areas where you suspect the mice. As they walk through it they will leave their tracks, and you will be able to locate them much easier.

Mice Versus Peppermint Tea Bags: Does It Really Work?

You might have heard that peppermint tea bags can help deter mice, but does this natural remedy actually work? The theory is that mice have a strong aversion to the scent of peppermint, which overwhelms their sensitive noses and drives them away. Placing peppermint tea bags in areas where you’ve spotted mouse activity could provide a mild deterrent, but don’t expect it to solve a serious infestation. While the strong smell may cause mice to avoid a specific spot temporarily, it’s not a guaranteed or long-term solution. For more effective results, peppermint oil in concentrated form, combined with sealing entry points and removing food sources, is generally a better approach.

What are some family-friendly methods for getting rid of mice?

Homes with small children and pets need to be very aware when using some of the commercial mouse traps and poisons. The same poison that attracts the most can easily attract your cat or dog. Here are a couple most deterrences that are safe if you have pets and small children around.

Baking soda – Sprinkle baking soda around places that mice are known to frequent. They do not like baking soda and will choose a different place to nest.

Bay leaves – Sprinkle bay leaves around your kitchen area.

Mint plant – Purchase a mint plant, not only does it make your house smell great but mice do not like mint.  If you don’t have a mouse problem yet this is one way to keep them out of the house. If you’ve already had a mouse infestation take some of the mint leaves and sprinkle them around the house. Be sure to replace them from time to time as they lose their odour.

Mint toothpaste – After using the baking soda trick once you’ve located where the mice are coming in and out of the wall, use a little bit of mint toothpaste by smearing it around the location. The smell of mint will send the mice running.

Our Favorite Smell has to be the Peppermint Methods

Peppermint Oil For Mouse Deterent

Peppermint essential oil – Take a couple of cotton balls and add 5 to 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to each one. Place the cotton balls close to suspected areas but the mice are entering.

Peppermint tea bags – This one is probably our favourite since we’ve already established that mice are not fans of any type of mint, this method is a great way of preparing your own Mouse repellent. All you have to do is boil 2 cups of water after the water has come to a boil turn the heat off, and add a peppermint tea bag to the pot. Allow this concoction to steep for about 6 hours. Take a couple of drops of your dishwashing detergent and add it to the steeped tea. this will help the solution stick to your floors for a longer period.

How To Use This Method –

Fill a spray bottle with this solution and coat the floors and baseboards of areas where you suspect mice are entering your home.  Repeat this step every 3 or 4 days until you believe you’ve driven the mice away. It’s a good idea to still spray the solution at least once every couple of weeks to keep the mice out of your home.

As an extra deterrent, we like to take the tea bags and put them close to areas where we know the mice have been nesting, they will absolutely hate this and it’ll send them scurrying away To find a more appealing place to live.

Does the peppermint tea bag method really work?

I know that this sounds maybe a little too good to be true, but it really does work, we have tried it in a commercial restaurant that was doing everything it could to keep the mouse infestation at bay. After trying professional services and commercial products they decided to give the peppermint tea bag method a shot.

The professional pest control company was able to get the population under control and the restaurant used the peppermint tea bags to keep the population from returning. They’ve been very happy with the results after using this method for many months.

When to start using this method?

Mice are usually quite happy living outside in fields when there is good weather and lots to eat,  but when the weather starts to turn cold and food sources start to dry up they will look for other options. Mice will try to find their way indoors during the fall months as our weather begins to change. Even if you do not have a mouse problem, it’s a good idea to use the peppermint tea bag method in the fall as a deterrent.

Humane Mouse Trap

Looking for a humane way to deal with mice? Try a simple bucket trap. Set up a ramp leading to a bucket with a little water or bedding material. Place bait, like peanut butter, on a platform or roller above the bucket. When the mouse tries to reach the bait, it falls into the bucket. You can choose water to humanely drown the mouse or bedding to trap it for later release. This method is effective, easy to set up, and avoids harmful traps or poisons.
