The city of Edmonton is the Capital of the  province of Alberta. The Oilers were launched on November 1, 1971, with the team participating in its first season in 1972, among twelve founding franchises of the major professional World Hockey Association (WHA). They were initially said to be 1 of 2 WHA teams in Alberta (the other one being the Calgary Broncos). Nevertheless, when the Broncos folded prior to the WHA’s initial season began, the Oilers were renamed the Alberta Oilers. The Edmonton team is owned by entrepreneur and Calgary resident Bruce Urban, who bought the dormant Ottawa Rebel to begin the Edmonton team. Although early reports advised that they would be playing as the Edmonton Speed, they picked the name Rush on June 9, 2005.
