Someone Just Called About Your Ducts?

Ask these ten questions before you give out your address. Keep this by the phone.

The 10-Question Phone Screen

  1. What is your company's full legal name?Vague answers end the call.
  2. What's your street address here?Not a PO box. Not "we're mobile."
  3. What number can I call you back on?Then don't use it — look them up.
  4. Are you licensed, insured and WCB-covered?Protects your home and you.
  5. Is the price a flat rate — what's included?Furnace + every supply and return vent?
  1. Will you email that quote before arriving? No writing, no real number.
  2. What equipment do you use?Negative air + brushes, not a shop vac.
  3. Marked truck and uniformed tech?Ask for photo ID at the door.
  4. Can I pay by credit card, after the work?Cash-only is the biggest warning sign.
  5. Where did you get my number?A real caller can tell you.
The one-move rule Never book on an inbound call. Say "send me a written quote and I'll call you back," then look the company up yourself and dial the number you found. Caller ID can be faked — Edmonton Police have warned that scammers spoof real local business numbers.

Hang Up If You Hear

  • "We're already in your neighbourhood."
  • "$79 for the whole house."
  • "This price is today only."
  • "Cash or e-transfer only."
  • "It's a required/government inspection."
  • "We cleaned your ducts last time."
  • "You've got mould in there."
  • Any request for banking info or your SIN.

Already signed something at your door? Under Alberta's Consumer Protection Act you can usually cancel a direct sales contract with no reason within 10 days of receiving the written copy — up to a year if the seller broke the rules. The seller then has 15 days to refund you. Cancel in writing and call 1-877-427-4088.
