Why Duct Cleaning?

Duct CleaningThere are two reasons to clean you air system: health benefits and energy cost savings.

Is The Air You Breathe Clean?

The first part of improved indoor air quality is source removal and that is what duct cleaning.

You clean your bathtub. You clean your clothes, your refrigerator, the inside of your car. You do it because you value living in a clean environment.

What if you stopped cleaning your clothes, your bathtub, your furniture? Before long, your living environment would become unhealthy. And yet, the air you breathe every day may have circulated through ducting that hasn’t been cleaned in years.

Many people think that because air is flowing through the ductwork in their home, dust cannot accumulate there. As the photo shows, nothing could be farther from the truth.

How Does Dust Build Up in Ducts and how does Duct Cleaning Help?

As air flows through the ducts in your home, humidity makes the dust particles in the air sticky. When this happens, the particles begin to stick to the walls of the duct and exert friction on the air going by. This friction slows down the air, making dust deposition and build up even more likely.

What’s in Those Ducts?

Dust isn’t the only thing that builds up in air ducting. It’s common for dirty air ducting to contain these airborne pollutants:

• Cigarette smoke particulates
Pet hair and dander
Dust mites and their excretions
Bacteria
• Dust
Mold
• Pollen

The combination of trapped moisture and organic materials is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and toxic mold. Once these organisms start growing in ducts, they can circulate freely through the air.

Dirty Air Can Harm Your Health

Indoor air pollution has been linked to a variety of health problems, from colds, sore throats, and flu, to sinus congestion, headaches, asthma, allergies, memory loss, and inability to concentrate.

As homes are sealed to reduce energy costs, the amount of recirculated air that people breathe has increased dramatically. When dust, moisture, and organic materials (hair, dander, dust mite excretions, etc.) collect in air ducting, they create a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and toxic molds. When these organisms are recirculated throughout a home, they can cause serious health problems. “Sick building syndrome” has become a recognized description of buildings with air quality issues.

Children are especially susceptible to dirty air and dust. If any of your family is experiencing health problems like those described above, duct cleaning may help.

Duct Cleaning your furnace and ductwork can also help to reduce heating and ventilation costs. Benefits are realized in 2 ways:

  1. easier airflow. As dust builds up and friction increases, the furnace fan or air conditioner has to work harder to move the same amount of air. Heating and cooling costs go up.After the furnace and its ducting are cleaned, air flows easily through the system again, with less resistance. Often, airflow is increased so much that the fan has to be re-set. This easier airflow can reduce heating/cooling costs by 10-20%
  2. extending equipment life. 9 of 10 heating and cooling system failures are caused by a buildup of dirt and dust. Keeping air systems clean helps to extend equipment life.

How often should ducts be cleaned?

If you have allergies or respiratory problems, your entire ventilation system should be cleaned annually. Otherwise, a complete duct cleaning is recommended every two years.
