Cleaning stainless steel appliances safely

One of the biggest pet peeves for homeowners is keeping their stainless steel appliances looking like new, fingerprints from greasy hands are always annoying. There have been many tips on how to keep stainless steel appliances clean on places like Pinterest, but are they all safe?

Cleaning stainless steel appliances with WD-40

WD-40 Cleaning Stainless SteelOne of the favorites is using WD-40, while this method does work it’s not necessarily safe. If you read the MSDS on the side of a can of WD-40 it says it can be harmful or fatal if swallowed and may cause skin irritation. This is not something that I want to be spraying on an appliance that will be touched by myself or children. We all know the children like to put their fingers in their mouth, and we certainly wouldn’t spray them with WD-40 before they do it.

Cleaning stainless steel appliances with baby oil

Baby Mineral OilAnother favorite for the do-it-yourself crowd is using baby oil, but is this safe? This one’s kind of deceiving because the term “baby oil” sounds safe,  but it really isn’t.  Baby oil is a mineral oil which has been connected with hormonal imbalances. this can lead to a bunch of different problems in reproductive health.

The safe way to clean stainless steel appliances

The good news is a cleaning stainless steel appliance is very easy and could be done in a very safe way. Follow these simple steps and you will have them looking like new in no time.

Step One:  Let’s go to one of our favorite cleaning formulas, vinegar, and water. No harsh chemicals required, simply combine equal amounts of vinegar with water into a spray bottle. After your appliances have been completely cleaned move on to step 2.

Step Two:  This is the part that keeps your stainless steel appliances shiny, using a soft cloth, or microfiber cloth pour a little olive oil (yes, the cooking oil)  on to the middle of the cloth and buff away. Olive oil is the only ingredient you are going to need to keep your stainless steel appliances shining brightly like new.

Remember, store-bought stainless steel cleaners are typically filled with harsh, toxic chemicals. The reality is this mixture above works just as well, it’s cost-effective and it’s much safer for your family. You probably have all the items in your pantry that you’re going to need.
