A typical duct cleaning takes a few hours for most single-furnace homes. The exact time depends on the size of your home, the number of vents, and whether you have extras like air conditioning, multiple furnaces or a zone system. We'll give you a time estimate when you book.
What's A Realistic Time Estimate?
For a standard single-furnace home with no A/C, you can generally expect the job to take a few hours from setup to cleanup. Larger or more complex homes take longer. We'd rather take the time to do the job thoroughly than rush through it — a proper cleaning of the whole system is the entire point.
What Affects How Long It Takes
- Size of your home. More square footage usually means more ducting and more vents to clean.
- Number of vents and diffusers. Every supply and return register is part of the job, so more of them adds time.
- Air conditioning. A system with A/C has more components to clean than one without.
- Multiple furnaces. Each additional furnace and its ducting adds to the total.
- Zone systems. Homes with zoning have extra dampers and runs to address.
- Add-on services. Cleaning the dryer vent at the same time adds a bit more time.
- Condition of the system. Ducts that haven't been cleaned in many years, or homes with heavy buildup, can take a little longer.
What Happens During The Visit
Knowing the steps helps set expectations for the time involved:
- Setup. We arrive, locate your furnace and vents, and protect your floors and the work area.
- Cleaning the system. We work through the furnace, the supply and return ducting, and each diffuser, removing the built-up dust and debris.
- Any add-ons. If you've booked dryer vent cleaning or have A/C or multiple furnaces, we take care of those.
- Cleanup. We tidy the work area and leave your home as we found it — only cleaner.
Do I Need To Be Home The Whole Time?
Someone should be home to let our technician in and point out the furnace and vents at the start. After that, you're welcome to go about your day — you don't need to hover or stay in the room. We treat your home with respect throughout and clean up before we leave. Many customers carry on with their day-to-day while we work.
Planning your day: For a standard single-furnace home, setting aside part of a morning or afternoon is usually plenty. If you have a larger home, A/C, multiple furnaces or zones, mention it when you book and we'll give you a more specific time estimate so you can plan around it.
How To Prepare So It Goes Smoothly
You don't need to do much, but a little prep helps the job move efficiently:
- Make sure our technician can access your furnace and the area around it
- Move any large items away from vents and registers where you can
- Secure pets so they're comfortable and out of the work area
- Let us know in advance about A/C, extra furnaces or zones so we can plan the time
