It is 29°C in Edmonton, the air conditioner has been running for an hour, and the air coming out of your vents feels like a lukewarm sigh. Before you assume the worst — a dead compressor, a four-figure repair — take a breath. When an A/C blows warm air, the cause is usually one of six things, and you can check the first four yourself in about fifteen minutes without a single tool. Here is the order a technician would check them in, adapted for Alberta homes.
Step One: Rule Out The Thermostat (Seriously)
Every technician has a story about a “broken” air conditioner that was actually a thermostat set wrong — and nobody feels great about paying a service call to learn it. Two settings cause most of the confusion. First, the fan switch: if it is set to ON instead of AUTO, the furnace blower runs continuously, even between cooling cycles. Step Two: The Dirty Filter → Frozen Coil Spiral
This is the most common genuine fault we see in Edmonton-area homes, and it starts with something as cheap as a furnace filter. Your central A/C cools by blowing house air across the evaporator coil that sits above your furnace. That coil needs a steady volume of airflow to stay above freezing. Step Four: The Breaker And The Disconnect
Your indoor blower and your outdoor condenser are usually on separate circuits. If the condenser’s breaker trips — after a summer thunderstorm, a brownout, or simply an aging compressor drawing hard on a hot day — the furnace fan keeps circulating air that never gets cooled. It feels exactly like a broken air conditioner, and it is a thirty-second fix.
- Check the electrical panel. Look for a tripped or half-tripped breaker labelled A/C, condenser or air conditioner. Flip it fully off, then back on.
- Check the outdoor disconnect. The small grey box on the wall beside the condenser has a pull-out block or switch. Landscapers and kids have been known to pull them. Make sure it is seated and on.
- Wait five minutes before restarting. Compressors need pressure to equalize; most modern units enforce a delay anyway. Set the thermostat to COOL and give it time.
- If it trips again, stop resetting it. A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting you from an electrical fault — a shorted compressor, a failing capacitor, a wiring problem. Repeated resets can turn a repair into a replacement.
Step Five: Refrigerant — The One You Can’t Fix Yourself
Refrigerant is the working fluid that hauls heat from your living room to the outdoors. It circulates in a sealed loop and never gets “used up,” so a system that is low is a system that is leaking. Low refrigerant shows up as exactly the symptoms this article is about: long run times, weak cooling, warm air on hot afternoons, and an evaporator coil that keeps freezing even with a clean filter. You might also hear hissing at the outdoor unit or see oily residue on the refrigerant lines.
This one is not a DIY job, and not just for skill reasons — in Canada, refrigerants are regulated substances that must be recovered and handled by certified technicians. Topping up a leaking system without fixing the leak is also throwing money away; the new charge follows the old one out the same hole. A proper repair finds the leak, fixes it, verifies the system holds pressure, and then recharges it to specification.
Step Six: The Ducts Nobody Thinks About
Sometimes the air conditioner is making perfectly cold air and your ducts are losing it on the way. Supply ducts that run through a 50°C summer attic or an unconditioned garage give up cooling through every unsealed joint, and a duct connection that has sagged open can dump your expensive cold air into the attic while pulling scorching attic air into the system. The telltale: some rooms are fine while others blow warm, or the air gets noticeably warmer the farther a vent is from the furnace. The pattern behind almost every warm-air call: the system can’t breathe. A clogged filter starves the indoor coil. A fluff-blanketed condenser suffocates the outdoor coil. Dust-caked blower wheels move less air, and debris-filled ducts choke what is left. Before Alberta’s short, precious summer, the single highest-value thing you can do for your cooling is to have the whole air path — filter, evaporator coil, blower, condenser coil and ducts — professionally cleaned. Cold refrigerant can’t help you if the air never reaches it.
When To Stop Troubleshooting And Call Someone
Call a professional when the breaker trips more than once, when the coil re-freezes on a clean filter, when you suspect a refrigerant leak, when the compressor hums but won’t start, or when the unit is 15+ years old and limping through its second symptom this season. Describe what you checked — thermostat settings, filter condition, ice on the coil, condenser running or silent — and you will save the technician diagnostic time, which usually saves you money. And if the diagnosis turns out to be dirty coils or a choked blower, that is not a failure of your detective work; it is the most fixable answer on this whole list.
