What Alberta Actually Requires, And Why Your Attic Probably Isn’t There

Almost every homeowner we meet believes their attic was “done properly.” Most of them are right about what was installed, and wrong about what is up there now.

A new home built here needs an effective R‑59 attic — or about R‑49.2 if the house has an HRV, because the code trades approved mechanical ventilation against envelope performance. Neither of those is cutting corners; they are two routes to the same compliant house. “Effective” is doing a lot of work in that sentence

A nominal R‑60 attic does not deliver R‑60 evenly across your ceiling. Joists conduct heat, the material thins at the edges, and the code number already assumes all of that. It is why a genuinely compliant attic is usually blown deeper than the coverage chart on the bag would suggest — and why a tape measure at the hatch is not the same thing as a proper set of readings.

Settling is the part nobody accounts for

This is the finding that surprises people most. An attic blown to R‑40 in 1998 has spent nearly thirty years compacting under its own weight while wind at the eaves scours the perimeter. Measured today, that attic frequently reads like R‑25. The paperwork in your file and the ruler in your insulation are describing two different attics, and only one of them is heating your house.

R-50 or R-60?

Either is a defensible answer. The first R‑20 does most of the work, so the extra ten saves comparatively little on its own. But once you have paid for the crew, the trailer and the mobilisation, that last stretch is almost entirely material — it is the cheapest R-value in the whole job. If budget decides it, R‑50 is not a compromise; it is the threshold the rebate programmes themselves chose.

What we won’t do

Walls. We do attics, and only attics — drill-and-fill wall insulation is a different job with different risks in an older Alberta home, and we would rather be good at one thing. We also will not touch vermiculite: in a pre-1990 attic it may contain asbestos, removing it is licensed abatement work in this province, and we are not that contractor. If we find it you get photographs, an explanation, and no invoice.

The measurement is free because the answer is often “no”

We would rather drive out, take the readings, hand you the photographs and tell you your attic is fine than talk you into fourteen inches you don’t need. The homes that genuinely need this are obvious once somebody actually looks.

What A Blown-In Top-Up Actually Involves

Insulation is one of the easiest trades to fake, because nobody climbs up to check. Here is what we do, and what you get to see afterwards.

A measured depth, not an estimate

We take depth readings at several points across the attic — not one convenient spot by the hatch — because settling is never even. You get the readings and the photos before you get a price, whether or not you hire us.

Fiberglass or cellulose — you choose

Blown fiberglass doesn’t settle much and stays put in a windy attic. Blown cellulose fills tighter around framing and top plates and is recycled. Both hit the same R-value; we’ll tell you which suits your attic and then blow whichever you pick.

Baffles, and the gap at the eaves

An attic needs air moving from the soffits upward. Insulation blown into that gap chokes the ventilation and causes exactly the moisture problem it was supposed to prevent. We keep the eave channel open, with baffles where they’re missing.

Depth markers and a photo record

Marked rulers get left standing in the insulation and the finished depth is photographed. Anyone — you, a home inspector, a buyer’s agent five years from now — can put their head through the hatch and read what was installed.

We inspect and measure — free, and before any price

Depth readings across the attic, a look at the eave gap, the hatch, the bath-fan ducting and the state of what’s already there. You get the photos and the numbers regardless of whether you book the work.

You get one written number

Square footage, the depth you have, the depth you’re going to, the material, and a single all-in price. Not a per-bag rate that moves once the truck is in your driveway.

We prep before anything gets blown

Baffles at the eaves, a dam around the attic hatch so the new material doesn’t spill out every time you open it, and depth markers set across the span.

We blow to depth, then photograph it

The hose runs through the hatch and the material goes in to the marked depth. Then the finished attic is photographed against the markers, and those photos are yours.

What we check before we blow — and tell you about

Bath and range fans that vent into the attic instead of through the roof, gaps around the hatch and ceiling penetrations, and any sign of moisture. Burying those problems under fourteen inches of new insulation makes them worse and hides them. If your attic has one, you’ll hear about it before we start rather than after — and if it’s outside what we do, we’ll say so and you can call the right trade.

Why we won’t quote an attic over the phone

Because the honest answer depends on three things nobody knows over the phone: your attic’s square footage, how much insulation is up there now, and how evenly it’s spread. Anyone who gives you a firm insulation price without going up there is either guessing or planning to revise it later. Attic Insulation: Frequently Asked Questions

Open the hatch, put a ruler or tape into the insulation somewhere well away from the opening, and read the depth. Roughly speaking, eight inches is around R‑30, fourteen inches around R‑50 and seventeen inches around R‑60. If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists standing proud of the insulation, you are at about R‑20 or less. That five-minute check will tell you whether the conversation is worth having at all.
It is worth it in direct proportion to how short you currently are, which is exactly why we measure first. Going from R‑20 to R‑50 is a substantial change to how a house holds heat. Going from R‑50 to R‑60 is a marginal one. We will tell you which of those you are looking at before you commit to anything, and we are quite happy for the answer to be that you should keep your money.
We don’t administer any programme and we won’t promise you a grant — those schemes change, and we would rather not be the reason you were counting on one. What we will do is give you a written scope with the depths, the material and the square footage on it, which is the documentation these programmes normally ask for. Check what is currently available before you book, not after.

Usually, yes — and that’s the normal job. Old fiberglass or cellulose that’s dry and undisturbed is fine to build on; it hasn’t stopped working, there just isn’t enough of it. The exceptions are insulation that’s wet, mouldy, matted flat, or contaminated by rodents, which needs to come out first. That’s insulation removal, and we’ll tell you at the free inspection which of the two you’re looking at.
Neither, honestly. Blown fiberglass resists settling and doesn’t mind a draughty attic; blown cellulose packs in tighter around framing and top plates and is made from recycled paper. Both reach the same R-value at the depths we install. We’ll recommend one for your specific attic and then install whichever you decide on — we don’t earn more either way.
No. We do attics, and only attics. Drill-and-fill wall insulation is a genuinely different job with different risks in an older Alberta home, and we’d rather be good at one thing than adequate at two. If walls are your problem we’ll say so and you can bring in someone who specialises in it.
