1947: the town that was planned in one go

Devon was purpose-built to serve the Leduc No. 1 discovery — one of the only planned towns in Alberta, laid out street by street while the derrick was still famous. The practical consequence, seventy-plus years on: the original townsite is a coherent band of same-vintage homes with same-vintage heating systems. Where other towns give us a scatter of eras, Old Devon gives us rows of furnaces and duct runs that have aged in parallel — and a striking number have no record of a professional cleaning in their entire working lives. First cleans here are time capsules: the blower gives up decades in an afternoon.

The valley writes the seasonal load

The North Saskatchewan wraps the town in river-valley green — Voyageur Park below, poplar and cottonwood everywhere the bank climbs. Every June the fluff comes off the valley like weather, and returns in Imperial Park, Oakland and the townsite pull their share of it into systems that then run sealed through the following winter. The furnace at the centre of that loop filters a valley season whether anyone asks it to or not.

The river-edge new builds carry their construction

South Ravines and Highwood are Devon’s growth edge, adding homes along the valley rim. They inherit the standard new-build condition — drywall dust and sawdust drawn through the furnace during the build — plus the valley’s seasonal shed on top. A first clean after possession, then the normal rhythm, is the honest prescription.
