Put a town inside a treed river valley and every spring becomes nesting season at the dryer hoods. Devon’s vents have a wildlife story most cities only footnote.
The valley makes the hood prime real estate
The North Saskatchewan’s banks hold one of the densest songbird habitats in the region, and a dryer termination — warm, dry, sheltered, lint-lined — is the best cavity on any wall that faces it. Every spring we clear nests from hoods in Riverview, Imperial Park and the townsite, usually discovered when the dryer abruptly stops drying in May. Devon’s one-era construction shows up at the hoods too: original terminations across the townsite stiffening on the same schedule, flaps seating worse each winter, screens blinded by decades of outbound lint. When one 1950s hood on a street needs attention, its neighbours usually do too — the town’s great quirk, visible even in its dryer vents.
The valley’s June contribution
Cottonwood season doesn’t spare the terminations: fluff mats into hood screens exactly when nesting season ends, layering restriction on restriction at the outside end of the run. A hood that started spring hosting a nest can end June wearing a fluff beard — we clear both in the same pass.

Spring rule of thumb
