It is a muggy July afternoon in Edmonton, the air conditioner kicks on for the first time in hours, and for about thirty seconds the house smells like a gym bag. Then it fades, and you forget about it until the next cycle. You are not imagining it, and it is not just what old houses smell like. That odour is biological, it comes from a specific piece of equipment above your furnace, and it has a name in the trade. Here is what is growing in there, how to tell it from the other things that come out of vents, and which smell means you should leave the house.

Why It Smells Worst In The First Thirty Seconds

The timing is your most useful clue, and most people throw it away because the smell vanishes before they think about it. Between cycles your evaporator coil sits in a dark metal box, soaked in the water it just pulled out of your air. Whatever lives on it keeps working, and the gases it gives off pool in the still air of the plenum. When the blower starts it fires that concentrated slug out of your vents in one push. After that the same odour is diluted into hundreds of cubic metres a minute, so you stop noticing it — not because it stopped, but because it got spread thin.

One more pattern is worth logging: if the smell shows up only when you are cooling and never when you are heating, that points hard at the coil and the condensate pan — the only parts of the system wet in July and bone dry in January.

The Evaporator Coil Is A Cold, Wet Buffet

Your central A/C does not just chill air, it wrings it out. The coil above your furnace runs cold enough that moisture condenses onto the fins the way a glass of iced tea sweats on a picnic table — on a humid Alberta afternoon it pulls litres of water out of your household air, which is why there is a drain pipe under it. Now the second ingredient: no filter catches everything, and every particle that slips past lands on a wet surface and sticks. House dust is not inert grit. It is dead skin, pet dander, fabric fibres, pollen, and whatever blew in during the last cottonwood release. To a bacterium, a fin coated in damp dust is a buffet with the lights turned off.

The rest is arithmetic. The EPA’s rule is that wet material must dry within 24 to 48 hours to avoid mould. Your coil does not dry for weeks — from June until the furnace takes over in September it is wet every day, in the dark, at room temperature, with fresh food arriving on the airstream. What grows there is a biofilm: a slimy community of bacteria and mould bonded to the metal. It is not dust you can blow off, and it is why a coil goes grey and felted instead of shiny.

Technicians call this dirty sock syndrome — the industry’s long-standing nickname for exactly this fault, not a comment on your housekeeping. It smells like feet for a reason: the same families of bacteria that thrive on damp human skin do well on a damp coil and give off the same compounds. It shows up most on start-up after a system has sat idle, and most often on heat pumps. Health Canada’s position is that indoor mould growth should be treated as a potential health concern and cleaned up regardless of species — and if anyone in the house has asthma or allergies, “nuisance” is the wrong word for it.

The Condensate Pan And Drain: Standing Water You Never See

All that water has to go somewhere. It drips into a sloped pan, runs to a drain line, and leaves via a floor drain or a small condensate pump. When that path works the pan is merely damp. When it does not, the pan becomes a stagnant indoor pond sitting directly in your supply airstream. What blocks the path is, with grim symmetry, biofilm again: slime grows in the drain line, catches dust, and the line stops draining. The EPA specifically lists poorly draining condensate pans inside air handlers as a hidden mould location.

Your Ducts Are The Reservoir, Not The Source

This is where well-meaning advice goes sideways. Ducts are rarely where growth starts: sheet metal is dark and dusty, but it is not wet, and without water nothing much lives there. The coil and the pan are wet. That is the difference, and that is why the coil is the crime scene. What ducts do is hold and deliver — porous surfaces like internal liner and flex duct soak up odour and re-release it every time air moves. That is also why a coil problem is a whole-house problem: one square metre of biofilm above your furnace gets distributed to every bedroom on the schedule your thermostat sets.

Order of operations is everything, and it is the part most people get backwards. Cleaning the ducts while the coil and pan are still furred with biofilm is like changing your shirt without having a shower — the smell walks straight back into the clean ducts on the next cooling cycle. Done in the right sequence the fix is durable: clean the evaporator coil, clear and flush the condensate pan and drain line, then clean the ductwork that has been storing the odour. When It Isn’t Mould: Other Vent Smells, And The One Emergency

Not everything that comes out of a vent is a coil problem, and one of these is not a troubleshooting exercise at all.

What Actually Fixes It — And What Only Sounds Like It Does

Start with what does not work. Vent clip-ons and scented filters remove nothing; they add a second smell on top of the first, and now your house smells like lavender in a locker room. Ozone generators deserve a firmer warning: the EPA is unambiguous that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone “does not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants,” and may have no effect on contaminants embedded in porous material such as duct lining. What works is unglamorous and mostly mechanical:

When To Stop Guessing And Call Someone

Call a professional if the smell survives a fresh filter and a week of running the fan on AUTO; if you can see standing water or slime in the pan; if there is water or rust staining around the furnace; or if anyone is coughing, wheezing or getting headaches when the system runs. Also call if you cannot get at the coil to look — most coils are not homeowner-accessible. When you call, describe the pattern rather than the smell: when it starts, how long it lasts, and whether it happens in heating mode. That is genuinely diagnostic and it shortens the visit — and if the answer is a filthy coil and a plugged drain, that is the good outcome.

Musty A/C Smells: Quick Answers

Why does my A/C smell musty only when it first turns on?

Because the odour has been concentrating while the system was off. Between cooling cycles your evaporator coil sits wet in the dark, and the bacteria and mould growing on it keep giving off gases that collect in the plenum. Will duct cleaning get rid of the smell?

Only if the coil and condensate pan are cleaned too, and in that order. Ducts are usually the reservoir rather than the source — they store and redistribute the odour, but the growth itself needs water, and the wet parts are the coil and the pan. Clean the ducts while the coil is still furred with biofilm and the smell simply moves back into your freshly cleaned ductwork on the next cooling cycle.

Should I run the fan on ON to air the house out?

No — that usually makes it worse. With the fan set to ON, the blower keeps dragging household air across a soaking wet coil between cooling cycles. That re-evaporates the water the coil just removed back into your home and carries the coil odour out with it. Set the fan to AUTO so the coil gets a chance to drain and dry between cycles.

Do air fresheners or ozone generators fix a musty A/C?

No. Fresheners and scented filters add a second smell on top of the first without removing anything. Ozone generators are worse than useless: the EPA states that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone does not effectively remove mould, bacteria or other biological pollutants.
