You set the dryer for 45 minutes, come back, and the towels are still damp at the seams. So you run it again. Somewhere along the way that stopped feeling like a problem and started feeling like just how your dryer works — the machine is getting older, the loads are bigger, whatever. It is worth resisting that shrug. A dryer that needs two cycles is almost never a dryer that has lost its heat. In the overwhelming majority of Edmonton-area homes we visit, it is a dryer that cannot get rid of its moisture, and the reason sits in the four inches of duct between the back of the machine and the outside wall.
A Dryer Does Not Dry Clothes. It Moves Water Outside.
It helps to be precise about what the machine is actually doing, because the mental model most of us carry is wrong. A clothes dryer does not bake the water out of your laundry. It heats air, tumbles that warm air through the load so it picks up moisture, and then pushes that now-humid air out of your house through the vent. Heat is only half the job. The other half is evacuation, and it is the half that fails.
When the duct is restricted, the humid air has nowhere to go, so it lingers in the drum. Warm, wet air cannot absorb more water — it is already carrying what it can hold. The heating element keeps cycling, the drum keeps turning, the clothes keep sweating into air that is already saturated, and at the end of 45 minutes you have hot, damp towels instead of dry ones. The dryer did not fail to heat. It failed to breathe. That distinction is the whole article, and it is also why a repair technician who tests the heating element will often tell you the machine is fine.
There is a useful home test. Run the dryer empty on high heat, go outside, and put your hand in front of the exterior vent hood. You should feel a genuinely strong push of warm, humid air — enough to move a loose ribbon of paper held near the opening, not a faint waft you have to search for. If you cannot feel much, or if the flap is barely lifting, you have found your answer without opening anything up.
Walk The Duct: The Five-Minute Survey
Before assuming anything, go look at the run. Most homeowners have never actually traced the path their dryer exhaust takes, and the survey takes five minutes.
- Start behind the machine. Pull the dryer out far enough to see the connection. This is the single most common failure point in the whole system: a flexible transition hose crushed flat against the wall because the dryer was pushed back too far, or a hose that has worked loose from its clamp and is quietly venting into the laundry room.
- Feel the room while it runs. A laundry room that gets warm, humid and smells strongly of fabric softener during a cycle is telling you the exhaust is partly ending up indoors instead of outdoors. In an Alberta basement, that moisture does not evaporate away — it settles into the coolest surfaces it can find.
- Count the elbows. Every direction change is a place lint stops moving and starts collecting. Sharp 90° turns immediately behind the dryer are the worst offenders because the air is still full of fibre there.
- Look for sag. Flexible duct strung across a joist bay droops between supports, and every low spot becomes a pocket that catches lint and condensed water. A run that sags in three places has three developing clogs.
- Finish at the outside hood. Whatever is happening inside, the exterior termination is where the evidence piles up. More on that next.
The Outside Hood Is Where Most Of It Ends
Go outside and find your dryer vent. On most Edmonton-area homes it is a small hood low on the wall, often behind a shrub, sometimes at ground level where nobody has looked at it since the house was built. Open the flap with your finger and look inside.
What you are checking for is a mat of packed grey lint sitting just behind the flap. It forms because that is where the airflow slows down and cools, and once a small mat starts, it catches everything that follows. The flap itself matters more than it looks: if it cannot swing freely, exhaust pressure has to fight it open on every cycle, and a flap glued shut by lint and moisture turns your whole vent into a dead end.
Two Alberta-specific complications are worth naming. First, birds. A vent hood with a missing or broken flap is an attractive, warm, sheltered nesting cavity in spring, and a nest is a total blockage — if yours has one, that is a wildlife problem to resolve before it is a cleaning problem. Second, winter frost. Humid exhaust meeting −25°C air condenses and freezes at the termination, so a vent that was merely dirty in October can be genuinely sealed by January. If your two-cycle problem is dramatically worse in deep winter, ice at the hood is the likely reason, and it is a symptom of a restriction that was already there.
The Length Math Nobody Did When Your House Was Built
Residential code sets the maximum dryer exhaust duct length at 35 feet from the dryer connection to the outlet, and then requires you to deduct equivalent length for every fitting: roughly 5 feet for each 90° elbow and 2.5 feet for each 45°. Manufacturers often specify shorter limits than code, and the stricter of the two governs.
Run that arithmetic on a real basement laundry room and it gets tight fast. A 22-foot duct run with three 90° elbows is not 22 feet as far as the air is concerned — it is effectively 37, which is over the limit before you have accounted for a single gram of lint. Plenty of homes were built exactly this way, particularly where the laundry sits in the middle of the basement rather than against an exterior wall. If that is your house, no amount of cleaning will make the run short; what cleaning does is claw back the margin the lint is eating. That is a real and worthwhile improvement, but you should know what you are buying: a marginal system restored to marginal-but-working, not a redesign.
If the geometry is genuinely out of range, the honest fix is rerouting the duct to a shorter path or adding a listed booster fan, and that is renovation work rather than maintenance. We would rather tell you that than sell you a cleaning every year for a problem that cleaning cannot solve.
Foil Flex Duct Is The Other Half Of The Problem
The thin, accordion-ribbed foil or plastic ducting sold in hardware stores is convenient, cheap, and the wrong material for anything but the short transition between the dryer and the wall. The ribs that make it flexible also make the interior surface rough, and lint grabs onto every ridge. It crushes when the dryer is pushed back. It sags between supports. Plastic and vinyl versions add a fuel source to a duct whose whole job is carrying hot air and combustible fibre.
Rigid metal duct with smooth interior walls and taped — never screwed — joints is what the run should be. Screws are worth a sentence of their own: a screw driven through a duct wall leaves a spike inside the airstream, and lint accumulates on it like snow on a fence post. If someone assembled your run with sheet metal screws, every fastener is now a clog nucleus.
The pattern behind nearly every “my dryer takes two cycles” call: the machine is fine and the path is choked. Lint is not just at the trap you empty — the trap catches a portion, and the rest travels into the duct, packing hardest at the elbows and the exterior hood where the air slows. When It Is Not The Vent — And We Would Rather Say So
Cleaning the vent is not a universal cure, and it is worth knowing the cases where it will not help so you do not spend money on the wrong thing.
- The dryer runs but never gets hot. If the drum tumbles and the air stays cool to the touch, you are looking at a failed heating element, thermal fuse, or gas valve — an appliance repair, not a vent problem. A blocked vent produces hot, damp clothes; a heating fault produces cool, damp clothes. That is the tell.
- You are overloading the drum. Clothes need room to tumble and let air pass through. A drum stuffed past about three-quarters full will need a second cycle no matter how clean the duct is. Try one deliberately smaller load before you conclude anything.
- The moisture sensor is coated. Auto-dry cycles read dampness through two metal strips inside the drum. Fabric softener and dryer sheets leave a film on those strips that fools the sensor into ending cycles early. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol — a two-minute job that occasionally solves the entire complaint.
- The washer is not spinning properly. A washer leaving loads far wetter than it should hands the dryer a much harder job. If your laundry comes out of the wash noticeably heavier than it used to, start there.
- Your furnace ducts are not involved. Worth stating plainly: dryer exhaust is an entirely separate system from the supply and return ductwork we clean for indoor air quality. A furnace and duct cleaning will do nothing for your drying times. They are different jobs and should be priced and considered separately.
The Part Where This Stops Being About Laundry
Extended drying times are the mild symptom. The reason we treat a restricted dryer vent as a safety item rather than a convenience one is what the NFPA data shows: an estimated 13,820 U.S. home structure fires a year involve clothes dryers or washing machines, and the leading contributing factor in dryer fires is failure to clean, accounting for about a third of them. Dust, fibre and lint are the leading items first ignited. This is not an obscure hazard; it is the most predictable and most preventable one in the laundry room.
The mechanism is straightforward. Restricted airflow means heat that should be leaving with the exhaust stays in the system instead. Lint is exceptionally flammable and it is packed against the hottest surfaces the appliance has. A dryer that runs long and finishes hot has both ingredients at once. Treat these signs as urgent: a burning or scorched smell during a cycle, a dryer cabinet or exterior wall hot to the touch, or a machine that repeatedly shuts itself off mid-cycle on a thermal limit switch. Stop using it and get the vent cleared.
Gas dryers add one more consideration. A gas dryer’s exhaust carries combustion products, so a badly blocked vent is a carbon monoxide question as well as a fire one — which is a good reason to have a working CO alarm on every level of the house regardless. How Often, Realistically
Once a year suits most households. Move to twice a year if you have a large family doing daily loads, if you dry a lot of pet bedding or fleece and microfibre (both shed heavily), or if your duct run is long or elbow-heavy. Between professional cleanings, the habits that matter are small: clean the lint trap before every single load, vacuum the lint trap cavity a few times a year, keep a hand’s width of clearance behind the dryer so the transition hose is not crushed, and check the exterior hood each spring for nesting and each winter for frost. And keep a note of what normal looks like — if a load that has always taken 45 minutes starts taking 70, that drift is the earliest warning you will get.
Dryer Taking Two Cycles: Quick Answers
Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry one load?
Nearly always because humid air cannot get out of the house fast enough. A dryer works by heating air, letting it absorb moisture from the clothes, and pushing it outside — when the duct is restricted by lint, a crushed hose or a blocked exterior hood, that saturated air stays in the drum and cannot pick up more water.
