June Loads The Coil, July Asks It To Work
Edmonton’s cooling season is short, intense and badly timed: the city’s biggest particulate event ends days before the first heat wave begins.
The fluff-then-heat sequence
The river valley’s poplar and cottonwood shed through June, and the fluff goes wherever air moves — including through every return in the city and, outside, straight into condenser fins. Then July arrives, the heat domes settle in, and the A/C is asked to run flat out with a coil that just spent a month collecting seed fluff and pollen on its damp surface. The result is the call we get every summer: cooling that runs all day and never quite catches up. The coil isn’t broken. It’s wearing June.
Damp is what makes the coil different
Everything else in the system collects dust dry. The evaporator coil collects it wet — condensation keeps its surface damp through cooling season, so what lands doesn’t rest, it adheres and grows. That’s the musty smell on start-up, and it’s why a coil can’t be vacuumed clean from below with the wand of a shop vac. It has to be cleaned in place, carefully, with the system open.
Zones are an Edmonton executive-home standard
In Windermere, Keswick and the larger Terwillegar homes, two furnaces and zoned dampers are routine — and a damper blade that’s collected years of debris stops seating properly, bleeding air between zones the thermostat can’t account for. Each zone is +$60 to clean and cycle-test, published up front, because “we found a zone” should never be a driveway surprise.
Why we won’t sell the coil alone
The coil sits in the middle of the same loop as the ducts. Cleaned in isolation, it re-coats within weeks — so we bundle it with the full duct cleaning and the furnace, $405 + GST for all of it. Anyone offering a stand-alone $79 coil special is selling you a fortnight.
The Edmonton timing
Book the bundle in spring, after the furnace’s marathon and before the fluff — the coil starts the heat waves clean, and the whole system benefits going into summer.
