The Split-Level Era Buried Its Dryer Runs
Sherwood Park’s 1960s–80s boom built split-levels by the thousand — and the split-level did something distinctive with the laundry: it put it in the middle of the house.
Mid-house laundry, mid-house runs
In the four-level splits of Mills Haven, Glen Allan, Craigavon and Brentwood, the laundry commonly sits on the lower-middle level — which means the vent run travels horizontally through joist spaces, jogs around framing, and covers real distance before it finds an exterior wall. Horizontal runs are lint’s favourite terrain: no gravity assist, plenty of seams, and a temperature drop along the way that lets moist air cool and lint settle. Forty years on, many of these runs have never once been professionally cleared. They’re the hamlet’s quietest fire-safety project, one house at a time.
Original hardware, original flaps
The same era’s exterior hoods are aging in place: flaps that no longer seat, screens half-blinded by decades of outbound lint, terminations painted over during a fascia refresh in 1998. Restriction at the hood chokes the whole run — we check it, photograph it, and tell you plainly if hardware needs replacing.
The new districts sealed everything but the vent
Summerwood, Emerald Hills and Aspen Trails build tight — but the dryer vent is the one hole in the envelope that must stay open, and modern two-storey floorplans give it a long, elbowed path from upstairs laundry to side wall. Busy young-family load volumes do the rest. New drywall, old physics.
