Devon’s Oldest Attics Contain Whatever Each Decade Thought Was Right
The original townsite homes have had three-quarters of a century of owners, and most of them did something to the attic. What is up there now is the sum of those decisions, and some of it has aged much better than the rest.

The oldest townsite attics can still hold traces of what was installed when the houses were built — shavings, mill waste, or early loose materials that predate anything you would recognise as modern insulation. Where that has stayed dry it is harmless. Where it has ever been wet it is a different matter entirely, and it comes out.
Roof leaks, three owners ago
Seventy-five years is enough time for any roof to have failed at least once. The leak was fixed, the ceiling was painted, and the wet insulation stayed exactly where it was. Owners are routinely astonished by what is above a ceiling that has looked fine their entire time in the house — and that history is the commonest reason a townsite attic genuinely needs emptying.
Ways in, on old roofs
Older soffits, vents and roof-wall junctions give birds and mice more opportunities than a modern roof does. Devon backs onto river valley and open country, so the pressure is real. Occupied insulation vacuums out under containment.

Homes along the valley edge take weather from a direction the rest of town is sheltered from. That drives the same wind-and-snow-at-the-perimeter pattern seen in the more exposed markets, and the resulting damage sits over the outside walls.

On a townsite home, the insulation you can see was probably added decades after the house was built. What is underneath it — and whether that has ever been wet — is the question that decides between a top-up and a removal. It takes one visit and a set of photographs to answer.
